Spiral Drawings

28 Mar

It has been a while since I’ve wrote something for this blog. One of the reasons is that I finally moved and got my own place now. When I started decorating the house, I knew I wanted something to add a few personal things. Thats when I got the idea to create some kind of artwork of my favorite guitarists. I remembered some kind of artwork that I saw in Centre Pompidou that made use of lines with different widths to create an image. I thought it was a neat effect so I tried implementing it with a spiral shape. Using a basic algorithm to draw a spiral, I sampled the color of a loaded image to see how light or dark the image was at the same point I was drawing the spiral. I used this to adjust the thickness of the lines.

The final result that I created with this tool can be seen in this photo. For anyone who’s interested, the artists are: Paul Wagoner, Misha Mansoor, Tosin Abasi and Paul Ortiz.

But there’s more! You can play around with this tool too, by visiting this page. I’ve added a few controls to mess around with the settings, and you can export the image to a PNG (bitmap) file or a SVG (vector) file. Both are pretty CPU heavy, so give it a few seconds before rage-quiting your browser!
